OLD NEWS8/11/03 Waterbury Reservoir Update The State of Vermont continues to work on the Waterbury Reservoir dam. The water level is approximately 40' to 45' below the normal level. The reservoir is significantly reduced in size but still usable. It was lowered an additional 25' last summer making it unusable due to difficult boat launch. The Reservoir Dogs tournament is being held at Waterbury this year at the Blush Hill site. Check event info and directions. 5/03/02 Waterbury Reservoir Update (hope to have another update after 4/26/03 mtg.) The State of Vermont began an earlier than planned drawdown of Waterbury Reservoir last summer based on a safety concern to reinforce the dam. The tournament normally held on Waterbury Reservoir is being held on Wrightsville Reservoir until work on the dam is complete. The water level was approximately 45' below normal level throughout the summer of 2001. The reservoir was significantly reduced in size but still usable. The latest (but not yet guaranteed accurate) information is that the reservoir will be lowered an additional 25' this summer reducing the surface area to less than half of last summer. 5/03/02 Observer Law (may have more after 4/26/03 mtg.) A few Green Mountain Water Skier members have worked hard to change Vermont's observer law for 3 or 4 years. The proposal is to allow a rear-view mirror to be substituted for an observer. In a poll of other states, we learned that 22 of 47 responding had a similar law. Carol and Ed Brown wrote an informative letter to our legislators. Because of this continued unsuccessful effort, we are hoping to have a LARGE membership drive this year. Numbers speaka large membership body is important. The State reps may not think we're that large a group. If you would like to be informed of the status, please contact Carol Brown to be put on her e-mail list. Then write to or call your representatives to ask for their support (during the fall, prior to the legislative session). This failed to pass each year, after all the effort that has been put into it by club volunteers, simply because it was stalled in committee. Please help us gain this necessary flexibility for skiing "pairs." Carol had written all 50 states to inquire about their observer laws and 49 responded. Twenty-two states have similar laws. Carol then wrote a letter to our legislators summarizing our request. The decision on location of a slalom course in Lake Fairlee was favorable for the skiers. Thank you to those that helped and showed their support. Ski Boat Exhaust Lethal U.S. warns of dangers of swim platforms For the first time, federal officials have hard evidence that carbon monoxide can gather in deadly concentrations behind ski boats.
